Explore, Learn, Live in Florence
Located in the heart of South Carolina, Florence is the perfect family-oriented place to enjoy a lively retirement lifestyle. There’s so much to see and do in this All-American City: Transport yourself through time by visiting historic landmarks, go antiquing or shop at modern boutiques, grab a bite to eat from the Florence “Must Try” list, indulge in a round of golf, or relax outside at nearby Myrtle Beach. And The Manor is right in the middle of it all! With everything Florence has to offer, residents of The Manor and their families are bound to find something they enjoy, no matter the age range, activity level, or interest.
History and Arts
Florence has a long and storied history: It was a major stop for the Confederate army during the Civil War. The city served as a supply and railroad repair center, and its location near the Pee Dee River made it excellent for exporting goods. The area is now home to many museums and historic sites, including the Florence County Museum, the War Between the States Museum, and the nearby site of a 1958 accidental atomic bomb drop (really, you have to see it to believe it). We are also the origin of the South Carolina Pecan Trail, and Florence boasts plenty of places to sample and learn about this delicious history.
Visitors and residents alike can catch a show at the Florence Little Theatre or Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center, see a Broadway musical or concert by the Florence Symphony, or check out top artists as they come to perform at the Florence Civic Center. There’s always a great show playing in Florence!
Shopping
Known as the local shopping hub, Florence is full of big name stores, specialty shops, and boutiques with the latest fashions. For the basics, our two malls, Florence Mall and Magnolia Mall, are easily accessible and have everything one could want or need. We also do the antique community proud, as the birthplace of Antiques Roadshow host Mark L. Walberg, with more than 30 nearby antique shops to peruse and discover hidden treasures.
Dining
Florence is a foodie’s heaven with dozens of restaurants and all kinds of cuisine. In the mood for savory pork barbecue, perfectly prepared sushi, or a fresh-caught seafood feast? We’ve got all of that and more. Check out the Florence “Must Try” list for mouth-watering recommendations on the best places around town.
Outdoor Adventures
Get out and about with the grandkids and loved ones to explore the great outdoors. We have renowned golf courses for a day on the links, and if you need to entertain little ones, Florence boasts more than a dozen parks and other outdoor recreation areas. We’re also a short drive away from the famous Darlington Raceway, so you can catch NASCAR races in person. And of course, well-loved Myrtle Beach is just an hour away if you need some sand and sun. The possibilities are endless!
